Buying an iPhone 17 in Canada in April: Carrier Financing Is Now the Better Deal
April 1, 2026 · Cellulo Team
The math on buying an iPhone 17 in Canada just changed. In March, Apple's 0% APR financing paired with Koodo's $25 BYOD flash sale saved buyers roughly $272 over carrier financing. That window closed March 31. With standard BYOD pricing back in effect, carrier financing — particularly through Fido — is now the cheaper route for most people.
Here's how the numbers look in April.
What Each Carrier Is Offering for $0 Down
All three carriers charge $1,161 for the iPhone 17 256GB, financed at $48.38/mo over 24 months. There is no hardware credit applied. The qualifying plan is where the differences emerge:
| Fido (20GB) | Fido (60GB) | Koodo | Virgin Plus | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plan before autopay | $44/mo | $49/mo | $65/mo | $60/mo |
| Autopay discount | -$5 | -$5 | -$10 | -$10 |
| Net monthly plan | $39/mo | $44/mo | $55/mo | $50/mo |
| Data | 20GB | 60GB | 60GB | 60GB |
| 5G speed | Up to 1 Gbps | Up to 1 Gbps | Up to 250 Mbps | Up to 1 Gbps |
| Hotspot | $0 Promo ✓ | $0 Promo ✓ | Via perk | Included |
| Intl calling | Included ✓ | Included ✓ | Via perk | 27 countries |
| Device monthly | $48.38 | $48.38 | $48.38 | $48.38 |
| Connection fee (online) | $0 waived | $0 waived | $0 waived | $80 (net ~$25 after bill credit) |
| Shipping | $0 | $0 | $25 | $0 |
| Total monthly | ~$87/mo | ~$92/mo | ~$103/mo | ~$98/mo |
| Total 24 months | ~$2,097 | ~$2,217 | ~$2,481 | ~$2,361 |
All prices require autopay enrollment. Both Fido plans confirmed to include $0 Hotspot Promo, Unlimited International LD, and Enhanced Voicemail. No hardware credit is currently being applied.
Fido is the clear price leader at $39/mo for the qualifying plan — $11 less than Virgin Plus and $16 less than Koodo. Over 24 months, that gap compounds: Fido costs $264 less than Virgin Plus and $384 less than Koodo.
The catch is data. Fido's qualifying plan is 20GB — enough for moderate users, but tight for anyone who streams regularly or works remotely. Virgin Plus and Koodo both qualify at 60GB, which is a meaningfully different experience.
What You're Getting for That Plan Price
Fido offers two entry options, both confirmed to include enhanced voicemail, a $0 Hotspot Promo, and Unlimited International LD. The 20GB plan at $39/mo is the cheapest path to the iPhone 17 on a national network. The 60GB plan at $44/mo delivers three times the data for $5 more per month — $120 extra over 24 months. For most people, the 60GB plan is the better pick: the feature set is identical and the data difference is significant.
Virgin Plus at $50/mo gives you 60GB of 5G data at up to 1 Gbps, unlimited Canada-wide calling and texting, unlimited international calling to 27 countries, unlimited international texting, Voicemail to Text, hotspot, and suspicious call detection. It's the richest feature set of the three at a mid-range price.
Koodo at $55/mo gives you 60GB of 5G data at up to 250 Mbps, a free perk from Rollover Data, Unlimited Long Distance to 27 countries, 5G Speed Boost up to 500 Mbps, 3-Day Easy Roam US, or 3-Day Easy Roam International. Koodo is the most expensive qualifying plan but the only one with CAN-US-MEX roaming flexibility built into the perk selection.
Does Apple 0% APR + BYOD Still Make Sense?
In March, the Apple 0% APR route paired with Koodo's $25 BYOD flash sale clearly beat carrier financing. With no hardware credits and standard BYOD pricing, the picture is more nuanced.
At today's pricing, the Apple route looks like this:
| Fido 20GB (carrier) | Fido 60GB (carrier) | Apple 0% APR + Koodo BYOD | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Device monthly | $48.38/mo | $48.38/mo | ~$47/mo ($1,129 at 0% APR) |
| Plan monthly | $39/mo | $44/mo | $50/mo (Koodo 80GB) |
| Total monthly | ~$87/mo | ~$92/mo | ~$97/mo |
| Total 24 months | ~$2,097 | ~$2,217 | ~$2,328 |
| Lock-in | 24 months | 24 months | None |
| vs Apple route | Saves ~$231 | Saves ~$111 | — |
Carrier financing through Fido 20GB saves roughly $231 over 24 months compared to Apple 0% APR with Koodo's $50 BYOD plan. The Fido 60GB route saves $111. For Virgin Plus and Koodo carrier financing, the Apple route actually wins — $2,328 beats both $2,361 (Virgin Plus) and $2,481 (Koodo). The Apple route's other advantage is flexibility: the BYOD plan is month-to-month, so if a Q2 flash sale brings pricing back to $25–$27 in late June, you can move instantly and recover the difference.
Who Should Go Which Route
Choose Fido 20GB at $39/mo for the lowest all-in cost at ~$87/mo — confirmed hotspot, international calling, and enhanced voicemail included. Right for light data users who prioritise bill size above all else.
Choose Fido 60GB at $44/mo for the best overall carrier financing deal at ~$92/mo — same confirmed promos, three times the data for $5 more per month.
Choose carrier financing through Virgin Plus if you need 60GB and want the best-featured plan at a reasonable price. $88/mo for 60GB with hotspot, international calling, and Voicemail to Text is solid value.
Choose carrier financing through Koodo if you cross the US border regularly and want roaming flexibility baked into your plan via the free perk. It's the most expensive carrier route but the only one with that option built in.
Choose Apple 0% APR + BYOD if flexibility matters more than monthly cost — you're not locked into a 24-month plan, and if a Q2 flash sale brings BYOD pricing down to $25–$27 in late June, you can move to it instantly and recover the difference.
