Getting Started with eSIMs Abroad

eSIMs have transformed international travel, making it easier than ever to stay connected without swapping physical SIM cards. But if you're using one for the first time, a little preparation goes a long way. Here are ten tips to make your first eSIM experience seamless.

1. Check Your Phone's eSIM Compatibility Not all phones support eSIM. Most iPhones from the XS (2018) onward do, as do many newer Android flagships from Samsung (S20+), Google Pixel (4+), and others. Most importantly: Your phone must be carrier-unlocked. Check your settings before purchasing a plan.

2. Buy Your eSIM Before You Leave Don't wait until you're hunting for airport Wi-Fi. Purchase your eSIM online while you have a stable connection at home. It takes less than five minutes through apps like Cellulo or Airalo.

3. Install the eSIM on Wi-Fi You need an active internet connection to download the eSIM profile to your device. Do this at home or in the departure lounge. Once installed, the eSIM sits ready; it only officially "activates" its duration once it hits a local tower at your destination.

4. Turn Off Your Home SIM to Avoid Fees This is the most important tip for Canadians. Even with "Data Roaming" off, carriers like Rogers, Bell, or Telus may charge you a $12–$16 daily fee just for receiving an SMS. For 100% zero fees, go to your 'Cellular' settings and turn off your primary SIM line entirely during your trip.

5. Understand Your Data Allowance Data goes fast. A 1GB plan is fine for a weekend of light maps and messaging, but if you're uploading Instagram stories or using TikTok, you’ll burn through that in hours. For a week-long trip, 5GB–10GB is a safer starting point.

6. Enable 'Low Data Mode' Both iOS and Android have settings to restrict background data usage. Turning this on prevents apps from "stealing" your paid eSIM data for background updates or photo syncing while you aren't looking.

7. Download Offline Maps GPS works even without data, but the map images don't. Download your destination in Google Maps while on home Wi-Fi. This ensures you can navigate even in "dead zones" without using a single megabyte of your eSIM plan.

8. Check for 'Top-Up' Support Not all eSIMs are created equal. Some allow you to "top up" the same eSIM if you run out of data; others require you to install a brand-new one. Check the "Additional Information" on your plan so you know if you can keep your current connection going.

9. Use Data-Based Messaging Since your primary SIM should be off to avoid fees, use WhatsApp, iMessage, or FaceTime for all communication. These apps use your eSIM data connection and work perfectly with your original phone number as long as you registered them before leaving home.

10. Do NOT Delete Your eSIM Profile Most eSIM QR codes are single-use. If you encounter a connection issue, do not delete the eSIM from your phone settings—you will not be able to reinstall it. Instead, contact support or toggle Airplane Mode to reset the connection.

With these tips in hand, your first eSIM experience will be smooth, affordable, and fee-free.
